Dear Mom

Aren’t kids just great!
I heard Mandy tell Carla, her little friend next door, that her grandma has a guardian angel that comes in to check on her, and I just had to write and tell you about it because it was so cute!

Mandy was playing on the swing today. She’s becoming a bit of a dare devil, and I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that she would hurt herself this afternoon. I was just getting the ingredients out to make some brownies when I heard a great yell curling through the air, a wave of sound that took me rushing out into the garden in a panic.

There’s poor little Mandy sitting on the ground holding her head. She’s got this habit of swinging and stretching backwards at the same time, only this time she went too far and bumped her head off the lawn. So I fussed her and kissed her until she stopped crying, and told her she shouldn’t swing like that because she’s bound to hurt herself sooner or later. She started crying again because she thought I was mad at her.

I took her inside and checked her over. There was no damage done, and she had been crying through shock at first, and then because she thought I was angry. She helped me make the brownies, then the two of us sat together at the kitchen window, savoring the gooey aroma of the baking and sipping some wonderful cool milk. I could see she was feeling better. Milk and cookies always worked for me, too. A real staple of childhood security.

Looking out of the window we saw our resident family of geese sailing over the lake towards our dock. They all jumped out except for one of the little goslings, which was weaker than the rest. Mandy watched with wonder as one of its parents gently helped it up onto dry land with its beak.

“Mommies are really for helping, aren’t they,” she said after a pause. “You help me, grandma helps you…….”
She stopped for reflection.
“So who helps grandma?” she asked, screwing her face up in that quizzical way that makes her look so adorable.  Before I could come up with a reasonable answer her face lit up and she shouted, “I know! The red button angel looks after Grandma!”

She told me what you’d told her about the call buttons you’ve put up in the house. You certainly haven’t lost your imaginative streak. When you press the red buttons you tickle the angel’s belly button so he knows you need some assistance? I like it.

I’m glad we got you that system. I know how good it feels to have somebody you can call on if you really need help fast. And I know it’s not about tickling angels belly buttons! But what does hearten me is knowing that you’ve got  a people-based call system. So when you press that button, there’s a caring professional there to decide on the best
people to contact. They know what your needs are. They know who you are. You couldn’t be in better, safer hands, even if you did have a guardian angel!

“Does the angel always come when your Grandma calls?” Carla asked, her eyes open wide with astonishment.

“Always,” said Mandy proudly.
