dvd anywhere review

This is a product by X-10 technology. You have probably seen their ads around the net for the smallest remote video camera... needless to say those things freak me out... this is a more consumer friendly product and it is a very good idea. Lots of people already have dvds on their computer so why not find some way of getting that signal to the tv so you don't have to spend 400 dollars on a stand alone dvd player. The idea of dvd anywhere is that you transmit the dvd signal from your pc to your tv via their transmitter reciever device. Its a great idea but the performance of their product in carrying out this idea is very bad, sub vhs at best. I don't think it is worth getting unless your are some kind of hobbyist interested in the concept of bad tv transmission.

However there is a happy ending, or at least a winning sub plot. DVD anywhere comes with a remote control called 'active home'. this has two parts. A very small receiver unit that plugs into your serial port. and a elaborate remote control that allows you to control your computer from anywhere within about 50 feet. So if you have a tv card you can watch tv from bed, change channels, controlling volume, or watch dvd movies, controlling playback, pause, rewind just like a normal remote... except this thing can be programmed to run up to 11 things on your computer, music, tv, dvd, cd, web,... it also doubles as a wireless mouse. And you can buy this separately for around 30 dollars... so my advice is skip dvd anywhere but get your hands on the 'active home' remote. And if you want to hook your PC to your tv use a lot of wire (please note: you need to have video out support on your computer to hook up a tv).
