How2 - Taking Aim at SIDS
One of the most helpless creatures known to man is the newborn human, and it takes about eighteen years for them to be able to finally make it on their own. For some children, that period of time is much longer, but were going on an average here.
One enemy to the newborn human baby in this modern technological age is SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. For some reason, babies just quit breathing. SIDS claims the lives of over 6 thousand babies every year. Theres no known cause, although there are a lot of suspects. For a list of those suspects, and what you can do about them, link to the following website, http://www.kidsource.com/products/fiber.optic.SIDS.html. Here you will find sensors that you can set up in the babys crib under the mattress. These sensors monitor the babys heartbeat, breathing rate, and blood pressure while the baby is sleeping without interfering with babys sleep.
So In this How2, were going to discuss a one option to keep an eye on your newborns until they reach an age where they will be better able to take care of themselves. The monitor were setting will send a signal to a two-way ActiveHome Interface. That ActiveHome Interface will then start an ActiveHome Macro which well call Check on Baby. This macro will be hooked up to a lamp, and a radio, with the idea that the sound may rouse baby enough to begin to breathe again on its own.
So hook up the lamp to a lamp module.
Hook up a tape player or CD player to an appliance module.
To set the macro, run the ActiveHome software.
Click on the "M" (macro) button on the far right side of the interface. This will bring up a separate box with options for creating macros. The interface will give you a list of the various appliances.
Click on the icon that says "Stereo" on the right hand side of your screen.
Drag that icon to the left side of your screen.
When asked, click on "Create a standard macro."
Next click on the "Table Lamp" icon and drag that over until you see a red box around the original macro.
Now go back to the standard ActiveHome interface, where you will the macro you just created.
Now click "Okay."
From there, you will be asked if you want to save changes to the macro. Just say, "Yes."
Now if this doesnt wake up the baby, or get it breathing again, then youre going to want to use a little more urgency. For that, were going to create another macro thats just a little more urgent. Were going to set a macro that will set off a chime, and turn on the lights in your bedroom.
To set the macro, run the ActiveHome software.
Click on the "M" (macro) button on the far right side of the interface. This will bring up a separate box with options for creating macros. The interface will give you a list of the various appliances.
Click on the icon that says "Global" on the right hand side of your screen.
Drag that icon to the left side of your screen.
When asked, click on "Create a standard macro."
This Global macro will turn everything on which will alert you to get out there and check on baby.
Now go back to the standard ActiveHome interface, where you will the macro you just created.
Now click "Okay."
From there, you will be asked if you want to save changes to the macro. Just say, "Yes."
In the meantime, youre now going to be able to sleep easier, knowing that technology, and ActiveHome are watching over the baby. But remember, nothing beats the advice of the family doctor. So if you have any questions concerning your childs health, be sure and seek the proper healthcare authority.
