Dear Dr. Dopolis,
Ive been reading your column for a while now, and I read
the letters of many people who write in to you and talk about their frustration with, and
their fear of, technology. Especially in regard to the interface such as the ActiveHome Remote.
My question is this. Why not change the interface so that it looks like a light switch or
something similar? It seems to me that would be easier than doing all this therapy. It would
certainly be a better use of your time.

User Practical
Dear Practical,
You have an excellent question. Make the interface between technology and the
user more user friendly. That way, rather than constantly talk my clients through their fear of
their technology, I could simply recommend a new product. But I cant just stop there. While
I have so many options to recommend, I must also deal with the fear of technology head on. So I
must do both.
X10s number 1 goal when designing new products is to make them as user
friendly as possible. One of the keys to working through a problem, especially when it comes to
the best, most intuitive user interface, is to consider all the options. Just as there have been
great designs in the keyboard, making them easier to use, X10 has invented a huge assortment of
controllers. Your ActiveHome Super Remote is only one of the options available to you. We have
the PalmPad, the SlimFire Pocket Remote, the Credit Card Controller, Telephone Responder and more.
You can even use motion sensors when you need to keep your hands free. The options are endless.
And thats what I like to advise all my clients. Look for options, and enjoy the process.
So when you have a couple minutes browse the X10 site and discover the option
that matches your lifestyle and comfort zone.
And remember, technology is your friend.
Dr. Dopolis.
