Watching Nature
Nature is a wonderful thing. On the one hand she can be powerful and violent like a thunderstorm, or she can be as gentle and delicate as a flower. Maybe she wants to be aloof, like the breeze, or as playful as a puppy. No matter what she does, she does it well, and its a wonderful thing to watch. Each one of us has a particular aspect of nature that we find exceptionally intriguing, or enjoyable, and nature is always willing to accommodate.
Valentina Gribkova and her daughter are nature lovers. Especially the more delicate
side of it. "Winter is a time when the humming birds come back to Silicon Valley," Valentina
says. And every year theyre out there watching these delicate creatures make their rounds from
flower to flower looking for that sweet nectar.
So to catch these beautiful little creatures, Valentina and her daughter attached an
XCam2 to their 200x telescope so that they could have front row
seats without disturbing the show.
But its not just the hummingbirds that catch the Gribkovas fancy. It seems
that nature has much to show off around the Gribkovas residence. "By using the XCam2 with
their telescope, weve been able to watch deer, eagles, and other animals in the mountains around
our house," Valentina says.
"One very cool application," Valentina says, "is to place X10's Anaconda camera (wired, with a 60 foot cord) in a Plexiglas
waterproof box with a lantern inside, and feed the Anaconda's cord through a garden hose. Carefully
attach the hose to the box so it provides an airtight connection. Then back above water, plug the end
of the Anaconda cable into a TV or VCR. Then lower the hose and box into the water. It delivers color
underwater images about 20 meters in depth." And that's not all. She tells us that "you can
observe and record various fish and coral. Even search for shipwrecks!" The whole underwater
world is at your disposal.
Thanks to the XCam2, you can record nature without disturbing it, and enjoy it and
record it at the same time. Natures got to be proud of us for helping her show off without
disturbing her.
