Santa and the HawkEye
are Watching You
December 5, 2001 - Its a temptation no kid can resist. There under the Christmas tree lay so many presents, and some of them have your name on them. Whats a curious youngster to do? "How about if I just sneak up to the Christmas tree and peek at all the presents. Wow, this one looks big. And its for me. Nobody is looking - maybe if I just take the tape off of one side and peek inside." But any parent will tell you that peeking will spoil the fun of Christmas if you know ahead of time what you're getting. Maybe not so much for the child, but definitely for the parents.
One set of parents found a way to keep their kids out of the presents until Christmas morning.
Tony and Anita were having a difficult time keeping their three young children away from the tree. It was becoming a Christmas ritual every year to try to quell their insatiable
curiosity, without spoiling their love for the holidays. Especially when theyre young enough not to handle suspense all that well. But they came up with a plan. Since they couldnt be in
front of the tree twenty-four-seven, they decided to try another tactic.
"We knew that they would be okay if they knew that we were keeping an eye on them," Anita said, "but you know how children are. Theyre okay when they know
theyre being watched, but its a real temptation for them when they think theyre alone."
So they hooked up the HawkEye motion sensors
around the tree, and set the HawkEye to chime when anyone came too close. They also connected the XCam2 to the VCR, so that if one of the young ones did "break the barrier," the XCam2 would show Anita and Tony who the guilty party was. But this wasnt covert. They told the children right off that they were setting this up.
"Needless to say," Anita says, "we havent had any break-ins." So while curiosity may have killed the cat (or in this case curiosity may have
gotten the youngster in trouble), X10 will keep them safe... from themselves of course.
