The Amazing "CarterCam"
I love big vans—the kind big enough to pack 6 kids, their bikes, camping equipment, several coolers, and a canoe. The best vans still have enough room for an air mattress and four-wheeler even after you think they’re full. The problem is that you can’t ever see out the rear-view mirror in these vans. Typically, you’re lucky if there’s a rear-view mirror out of which to look! John Stead and Harold Carter of Ontario, Canada found a great solution to this age-old problem using the X10 Nightwatch Camera and a little ingenuity. You can read about their invention on John’s website or get the short version here.
The camera marketAs chance would have it, there are a lot of products out there designed to provide a virtual “window” to the world outside (or behind) your van. Unfortunately, most are too expensive (between $600-1500) or simply impractical (imagine a Super 8 strapped to your hood). While searching for the perfect set-up, John found the X10 NightWatch camera and with the help of his friend, Harold Carter, hatched this plan: The PlanJohn and Harold began with this recipe for success:
The execution is quite simple, really. Step 1 – Attach the hingeBegin by fixing a hinge to one of the back doors using self-tapping screws. John recommends wrapping the hinge in electrical tape to avoid scuffing the paint. Don’t forget to measure the hinge carefully to avoid blocking the closing mechanism for the door. Step 2 – Lay the wireOpen your shiny new X10 NightWatch camera and flatten the cord to avoid bunching. Then, string the cord along the interior of the van between the camera and front seat. Make sure to pull out all the slack. Step 3 – Mount the televisionUsing two wide angle mending plates and self-tapping screws, mount the television to the cross member running between the front and passenger seats. You’ll want take this step slowly—being cautious not to mar the ceiling or pierce the roof with too-long screws. If the TV is heavy, pad it with foam to prevent wobbling. Step 4 – Connect it all togetherJoin the device cables to the 12v accessory jack. Connect positive to positive and negative to negative. Double, then triple check your connections. When you’re absolutely sure everything is right, tape it up well. Step 5 – The finishing touchAdjust your rearview mirror so that the TV screen is visible. REMEMBER: A standard TV must be viewed through a mirror in order to have the correct left/right orientation. Viewing a TV in front of you requires a reverse video, (left/right switched). The TV can be modified to reverse the horizontal connections but requires knowledge in electronics.
