Its Perfectly Safe, Little Red Riding Hood
August 17, 2001 -
Agnes & Brianna are 13-year-old timber wolves, and theyve been with their owner Ginger since they were 5 weeks old. According to Ginger, "they ran free until they were 6 months old, at which time they decided my chickens looked tasty." Thats when Ginger had to come up with another solution to keep all of her pets safe. So she set up an electric fence to contain them. "They make a formidable pair," Ginger says. "Agnes is confident, aggressive and has rarely met a human he didnt like. Brianna is shy, sweet and wary of all humans she doesnt know." And thanks to the Internet, and the XCam2, the whole world can look in on the pair and see how theyre doing compliments of "Gingers Exotic WolfCam."
Ginger lives in a rural part of the country with plenty of room for the animals to roam around in, and her wolves arent hurting for space. To make sure that she, and we, can see her babies, she set up the security camera looking towards the wolves "den." From there, every few minutes the picture is updated so that any onlooker can have a fresh update on the pair no matter what theyre doing.
"They made wonderful parents," Ginger says, "though I had a bit of a problem at first with Agness (the father) game of picking the babies up and tossing them in the air." It was frightening, until Ginger realized "they werent being hurt." Agnes was just being a playful parent. A playful wolf parent, which is different from us playful human parents who sometimes like to throw our own babies up in the air too.
But the most incredible things about them are their songs. Those eerie songs they sing in the middle of the night that for some reason makes the skin on the back of our necks crawl like its trying to get off our bodies and away from us. But its music to anyone whos ever loved the wolf. "They have different songs for different occasions," Ginger says, and with the built-in microphone on the XCam2, it can also be heard while viewing them on the VCR.
Theyve also got another talent that bears mentioning. According to Ginger, "they know the difference between the sounds of trucks and cars that have been here before, and those that havent, and are good enough to tell us which is coming before we even see it." Theyre almost as reliable as the XCam2 when it comes to alerting Ginger and her family that company is coming.
"They arent the drooling, snarling stalkers that Hollywood (and Disney) make them out to be. Theyre very loving, sensitive individuals with a myriad of emotions." When you visit the site, youre met with pictures of two wolves, Agnes and Brianna, who "have never known fear, or hunger and have had very little physical distress in their lives." But what may be the most important thing about them is that their species is still a dying breed, because they are so hated and misunderstood. Thanks to Gina, and the XCam2, were tilting the scales just a little more in the favor of the wolf... long may they live.
