The Mailbox Thief
May 25, 2001 -
In America, in 1639, the first postal service was established in Massachusetts. In 1775, the Continental Congress created their own postal system, and they put none other than Mr. Benjamin Franklin in charge. By 1789, there were 75 local post offices, and mail was carried over one thousand eight hundred and seventy-five miles. Then in 1860, the Pony Express began to run between Saint Joseph, Missouri, and San Francisco, California. A treacherous journey to say the least. But now, the mail comes directly to our homes every day. That is, unless somebody steals it. But catching the crook is much easier now than it used to be. Just ask Tan Cesar.
Tan Cesar bought the complete set of XCam2 cameras, both the standard XCam2 and the XCam2 WideEye, and he added on the ActiveHome software, and installed them all around the perimeter of his house. All because someone was stealing his mail directly from the mailbox. As Tan told us, "I usually come home late at night due to long travel from work." In such a case, where the mail just sits in the mailbox for hours, would-be thieves just can't resist trying to get at it.
Needless to say, the mail is a very personal thing to most of us. It contains letters from friends, bills that we must pay, sometimes it carries money and checks, and often it carries that important information that we don't want to give out to the rest of the world, such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, and other information that could be used to cause problems if it got into the wrong hands.
Well, the XCam2s and the WideEyes did catch the thief. "We found out that our neighbor's kid was stealing the mail," Tan told us. But it wasn't just from Tan that the neighbor kid was stealing. It turns out that he was stealing mail from his other neighbors as well. Tan told us, "We confronted his parents with the proof on tape." Needless to say, the parents had plenty to worry about, because stealing mail is a federal offense. This particular offence could have put their son in jail for a lot of years. And they couldn't argue with the videotape.
So now Tan is getting his mail, and the neighbor kid is aware that his actions can be seen thanks to X10, and the XCams.
