Obedience Cam
Theres an old saying, "While the cats away, the mice will play."
This also holds true for children, spouses, and pets. While many may think that pets are
"dumb" animals, evidence among pet owners seems to indicate just the opposite.
Pet owners will tell you that their pets are very smart. Almost human if you ask some pet
owners. And just like children, when the pet thinks nobodys looking, it will often
try to get away with something that it knows better than doing. For instance, it might try
jumping up on the couch, or it might try to get to the food on the kitchen or dining room
table. Then theres the ever popular drinking from the toilet. Of course these are
just a few of the troubles available for any pet, the list itself could go on for pages.
Levi MacLean has his XCam2 set up
with XRay Vision so that he can keep an
eye on his dog while hes at work. He also has a mini disc recorder, which he controls
via ActiveHome in which hes recorded several
voice commands to his dog, which are accessible instantly.
Sometimes when Levi looks in on his friend, he may have to search through
the house to find him. If its too dark in any of the rooms, he uses his ActiveHome
setup to turn on the lights.
Knowing that pets, like children, like to push their boundaries, Levi is
set up so that he can keep things in order on the home front even from work. Now, when he
looks into the house, and sees the dog on the couch, he hits a button that controls his
mini disc recorder. Then his voice suddenly booms throughout the house... "Get off
the couch." The dog suddenly jumps off the couch knowing that hes been busted.
Occasionally the dog will hear other things too. Things like "You
know youre not supposed to be in the kitchen." Or "What did I tell you
about drinking from the toilet." No matter what it is, the dog has learned that he
isnt going to get away with too much, even when he thinks hes alone. As far
as he knows, that disembodied voice is standing right there in the room watching, and
thats the call to behave.
"But theres more to it than just yelling at him," Levi
told us. "Hes my pal and closest friend. I have to check in on him and see how
hes doing and let him hear my voice from time to time. So I have some positive
statements on there as well so that I can tell him hes a good dog, and that hes
my friend."
