Walking Her Through Her Life
Richard DeGracias wife was driving home one day, when she was rear-ended by a
tractor-trailer truck. The car was short ended by two feet, and it took nearly forty-five
minutes for emergency workers to extricate her from the vehicle. The accident was nearly
fatal. Once they had gotten her from the car, they rushed her to the hospital where the
whole thing was touch and go for a while. After which, it took three years of physical
therapy to allow her some slight movement. She suffered damage to her spine in her lower
back, and was getting around the house with the assistance of a four-legged walker.
At first Richard tried installing light switches that were sensitive to
the touch, but those didnt work well. As Richard put it, "Aside from being
expensive, some devices are difficult to install, and may require an electrician."
Then Richards wife developed degenerative arthritis, and now the difficulty she
had was compounded by extreme pain in her joints and limbs. "To operate the light
switches required my wife to reach out and touch a switch or to slide a lever,"
Richard told us. And while that may seem easy for us, it can be an excruciating event
for someone suffering a degenerative disease. Lets not forget that she was still
using a walker, and so that would complicate reaching a light switch even more.
"The problem increased as she attempted to go from room to room
just needing to get around at night. That meant leaving the lights on. But if I was
not there to help her, then it meant coming home to a well-lit house. But that was an
expensive solution to the problem." And thats when Richard found out about ActiveHome, and all that it could do to help.
By using motion sensors he could
set the lights in the rooms so that as soon as his wife entered the room, the lights
came on, and when she was gone, they would go off. He also set the exterior lights and
walkway lights on timers so that they would be activated automatically, and only work
when needed. By using ActiveHome, his wife no longer needs to worry about the little
things like lights, and instead she can go about her business without interruption.
And Richard can relax knowing that if hes not home, his wife will be able to find
her way.
"Its great to have the ability for my wife to be able to feel
more at ease as she moves about the house. Especially when Im not home."
Well Richard, naturally we wish that this had never happened, but
were glad that we could be there to help give your wife the freedom she needs in
the wake of her accident.
