The X10 Weatherman
Some of us have heard of a rain gauge, weather vain or a barometer, but have we ever
heard of an aneroid barometer? How about an anemometer? Those terms seem complicated
to those of us who have never heard of them, but theyre actually fairly common
amongst amateur weather forecasters. A mercury barometer uses columns of mercury to
measure atmospheric pressure, and an aneroid barometer is simply a barometer that
doesnt use liquid, but contains a flexible-walled evacuated capsule. Of course
the actual definitions are much more complicated than that, but most of us dont
need to know the differences. Your local weatherman does, and so do airline pilots, but
not the average everyday person. But there are those who know those terms anyway,
simply because weather is their hobby.
Martin Richards is an amateur meteorologist. For fun, he tracks air
pressure, air currents, humidity, wind speeds, and all that other stuff that full-time
meteorologists do.
Tracking all of this takes some pretty sophisticated equipment, and
Martin has been both building his own weather equipment, and buying it as well. In
his backyard he has "a bank of weather instruments" which he uses to
"see" the air around him, and predict the weather for himself. "I
like predicting the weather," Martin tells us. "I feel like Im right
more often than the guy on TV."
Sometimes, in the process of the everyday work schedule, and family
schedule, getting to all that equipment can be complicated. So Martin has help, in the
form of the XCam2. "I use the XCam2 to view
a bank of weather instrument read-outs from any television in the house," Martin
tells us. "That way if Im in the middle of something, I can still see
whats happening." And Martin is adding another feature very shortly. That
feature is XRay Vision. With XRay Vision, he
doesnt have to wait until hes home to see what the forecast is going to
be. He can check on his instruments from work, or from any computer in the world. Of
course he wont know what the weather will be like in whatever corner of the
world he may be in, but that doesnt matter, he will know what its going
to be like when he gets home.
So along with all that weather equipment, X10 and the XCam2 have become
part of Martins setup, and part of his daily life.
