Peeking Puppets
Puppets have been popular for centuries. Scholars believe that puppetry originated even
before written language. They theorize that it started when prehistoric humans would place
their hands near a fire to cast shadows resembling animals, people, and imaginary
creatures on cave walls. Scholars also say that since puppetry was before written time,
well never know how or why puppets came to be. Even so, puppetry has seen a plethora
of contrasting attitudes. Some people see it as trivial and childish, and others argue that
its symbolic and deeply evocative art. Philosophers from Plato in "the
Republic," to Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) have used puppets to teach and instruct. The
latter, Mr. Rogers, turned puppetry into a great way of teaching children valuable lessons
on everything from getting along and understanding diversity, to how to have a positive
self-esteem.
Betsy Hanson is the assistant director of a puppet troupe. A puppet troupe
that gets to travel around to various schools and youth organizations around her local
area. They use puppets to teach and instruct, and to help the kids have a positive
learning experience. And theyve found a way to involve the audience in ways that
they hadnt previously been able to do.
Betsy and her troupe have set up the XCam2 just behind the "Puppet Stage" so that
it looks out over the audience. Then theyve set up a monitor so that the puppeteers
can "see" their audience and know who theyre playing to. "Try to
imagine the look of surprise when a puppet suddenly looks straight at one of the kids"
Betsy told us. "Its even more fun when the puppet says hey you, in the
blue shirt! Just what do you think is so funny? "
What a laugh that must be. The faces on the children are priceless, and
they connect with the puppets in a whole new way. Suddenly the puppets go from being funny
figures on stage to personal friends that the children believe know them personally.
"The kids really respond to this kind of puppetry," Betsy says. "And they
trust the puppets all the more, and theyre willing to listen and take us to
heart."
Whod have thought that X10 would be a part of a tradition that goes
back before mankind even had any form of language? How old does that make us?
