The Ghost of the
Garage Door!
The garage. The garage is one of those anomalies of suburbia. The garage was built so that
we could park our cars someplace where we could keep them safe from the elements and the
neighbors. But like everything else, the garage has evolved so that were no longer
able to fit our cars inside because there isnt room over the junk that takes up most
of the available parking space. So what we have now is that irony where we park in our
driveway, and use our garage for storage.
Michael Parks on the other hand, used his garage as a garage and
thats where he stored his automobiles. But he had a bit of a problem with his
garage door. In his words, "We have 2 single garage doors, both with older model
openers (fixed frequency). We began finding the right side garage door open after coming
home from work."
It turned out that the radio frequency used by his garage door opener was
conflicting with other nearby transmitting devices. In other words, someone elses
automatic garage door remote was also opening his garage door as well. This is obviously
not the optimal way to protect your house. But you know what they say? "Necessity is
the mother of invention." And Michael got pretty inventive.
"I plugged in two Universal
Modules, pulled the transistors from the openers, and used two keychain remotes to
control each door." From that, hes managed to put all the control of his garage
door back into his hands. No more opening up when someone else opens their garage.
"We feel relieved. Our home is safer." But he didnt stop
there. Since he was resetting his Keychain Remotes
anyway, he created a macro for his house as well, using the second button on the remote.
"The second button on the remote is used to trigger a "coming home" macro:
the lights go on in the hallway, stairway, and living room."
Now thats killing two birds with one remote. He can open the garage,
park the car, and the lights are on and everythings ready for him when he walks in
the door.
So clean out that garage, and throw whatever you dont need away. Put
the car in the garage, and let X10 take care of the garage door opener.
