Another story direct from the X10 mailbox! F. Whittom writes to us about a simple way to weather-proof your RoboCam. Take a look at the pictures he included to see how it's all put together.
 | Weather-Proofing Your RoboCam
By F. Whittom |
I recently purchased a RoboCam and was very pleased with it. I did have one problem, however. The area I wanted to place it was outdoors, which gets a lot of direct rain. I called X10 Support and they said it could be mounted outdoors but not in direct rain, snow etc.
I knew the cameras were weather-proof, as I have four that have been in operation outdoors for over eight months now. I thought about how to keep it out of the weather for about a week. This past weekend while sitting at my computer and viewing the cams in operation, I looked on top of my computer desk and there was the answer! The top cover to a 50 pack CD case.
I took the cover and snipped off the plastic tabs that held it to it base. I then set it on top of the mount and marked two spots on top where the screws would go after centering it on the pan/tilt unit. Next I drilled two small holes where the camera mounting screws would go through. I then placed a couple drops of silicone over the holes (to seal the drilled holes) and mounted the camera with the screws on top.
The cover is just the right size! It does not interfere with the pan/tilt functions at all, and it allows air to reach the pan tilt unit and protects it from harsh weather. In fact, it rained most of today. When I went home, I looked at the unit. It was dry except for the base, which I expected since it was not protected.
Thanks!
