UX23A VCR COMMANDER INSTRUCTIONS

CONTENTS

Introduction The following instructions cover the configuration of the VCR Commander (UX23A). The UX23A is designed to receive a Radio Frequency (RF) signal from up to four X10 Motion Sensors and initiate a five minute recording sequence using the existing Infrared (IR) codes used by your VCR.

Hardware Requirements (1) VCR Commander (UX23A)
(1) VCR Commander power supply (D9100)
(1) IR emitter cable
(1 - 4) X10 Motion Sensors (MS13A, MS14A, or MS16A)

Setup Initial Configuration

  1. Detach the IR emitter cable.

  2. Attach the D9100 to the UX23A and plug into a standard AC receptacle. You may also insert 4 “C” size batteries if desired.

Programming the IR Codes

You will require your existing VCR remote control to perform the following steps.

  1. Push and hold the RECORD button on the UX23A until the LED on the UX23A illuminates.

  2. Release the RECORD button on the UX23A, then quickly push and release the same “Record” button one time. The UX23A will begin beeping and the LED will flash approximately seven times then remain solid. Note: Do not wait more than five seconds between steps 2 and 4.

  3. Position your VCR's remote control no more than an inch away from the clear, IR target located on the back of the UX23A.

  4. Aim the remote at the Infrared target and hold the RECORD button on your VCR's remote. You will hear one beep, and the LED on the UX23A will go out and immediately come back on.

  5. Press and release the “Stop” button on the UX23A. The UX23A will begin beeping and the LED will flash approximately seven times and remain solid. Note: Do not wait more than five seconds between steps 5 and 7.

  6. Position your VCR's remote control no more than an inch away from the clear, IR target located on the back of the UX23A

  7. Aim the remote at the Infrared target and hold the STOP button on your VCR's remote. You will hear one beep, and the LED on the UX23A will go out and immediately come back on.

  8. Allow the UX23A to time out. This will take approximately ten seconds. The IR programming of your UX23A is complete.

Programming the Radio Frequency* (Motion Sensor) Codes

  1. Program each Motion Sensor to the desired House/Unit code. Click here for more detailed instructions on Motions Sensors.

  2. Push and hold the “Play” button on the UX23A until the LED on the UX23A illuminates.

  3. Push and release the “House/On” button on your first Motion Sensor. You will hear one beep and the LED on the UX23A will go out.

  4. Program the remaining three Motion Sensors by following steps 2 and 3 for each Motion Sensor.

Final Configuration

  1. Attach the IR emitter cable to the UX23A.

  2. Position the black IR emitters in front of the IR target window on your VCR (where you normally aim the VCR's remote control).

  3. Verify the VCR is powered on and insert a blank tape.

  4. Send any one of the four programmed RF codes. Your VCR will record for five minutes unless another programmed RF is received (at which point the five minute counter will reset and VCR will continue recording.)

Home and Away Modes The UX23A can operate in “Home Mode” or in “Away Mode”.

In “Home Mode”, the UX23A will only beep when motion is detected. No IR codes will be sent to your VCR, therefore no recording will take place. This is intended to provide an audible indication of movement to the user.

In “Away Mode”, the UX23A will make no sound, but will begin recording when any one of the programmed Motion Sensor codes is received. The default recording time is five minutes per motion event. This means that every time motion is detected, the five minute cycle is reset. For example:

12:00 P.M. - Motion is detected (“A1 On” is sent).
12:00 P.M. - The UX23A begins five minute recording event.
12:02 P.M. – Motion is again detected (“A1 On” is sent)
12:02 P.M. – The UX23A resets five minute record event.
12:07 P.M. – UX23A sends “Stop” command to VCR. Recording ends.

To toggle between Home and Away Modes, simply push and hold the “Stop” button on the UX23A until one, long beep is heard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do when my UX23A will not accept IR codes during programming?

  1. Verify UX23A is connected to functional AC receptacle.

  2. Verify IR emitter cable is NOT connected to UX23A.

  3. Ensure batteries in VCR remote are no more than six months old.

  4. Ensure VCR remote is aimed at IR target on UX23A when sending commands.

  5. Ensure VCR remote control is within one inch of IR target on UX23A when sending commands.

  6. Ensure UX23A has been properly entered into “Learn IR” mode.

After verifying each of the above steps, clear IR memory in UX23A and attempt to relearn codes.

What should I do when my UX23A will not accept Motion Sensor codes during programming?

  1. Ensure new batteries are installed in each Motion Sensor.

  2. Ensure Motion Sensor have been programmed properly. Click here for detailed setup instructions.

After verifying each of the above steps, clear MS memory in the UX23A and attempt to relearn codes. You may also at this point try programming Motion Sensor codes following the amended instructions described in the NOTE included in the Programming the UX23A Radio Frequency* (Motion Sensor) codes section.

What should I do when my UX23A does not trigger RECORD event when motion is detected?

  1. Verify power to VCR is present.

  2. Verify recordable tape is present in VCR.

  3. Verify UX23A is in “Away Mode”.

  4. Verify connection of IR emitter cable to UX23A is secure.

  5. Verify proper positioning of IR emitters on VCR.

  6. Verify Motion Sensors are programmed properly (this can be done using Home Mode).
