Dear Eddie,

You know what your old dad’s like. Thrifty, that’s me. I watch the pennies. I’m sure you remember my favorite phrase "If ain’t broken, why fix it?" echoing through your childhood memories.

That’s what I felt about this Independent Living System when you mentioned it. "Things are fine," I said. Don’t worry," I advised. "Why spend money on something I’m never going to use?" was my clincher. But you persisted, mainly because you’ve built your whole career on the affirmation of "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again."

Well, since I got it, I’ve noticed two things.

To my surprise nobody’s stuck holes in my walls, trailed wires through my bathroom or given me a control box with tiny numbers I can’t read. All I do, if I ever need to, is press one of the buttons and the people behind the scenes do the rest. Now that’s service!

Also, I’ve realized that not needing this system is the whole point. It’s not meant to be used. At least, not in the way you’d use an ordinary present like a tie or a fishing rod.

And that made me laugh, son. Having a service at the push of a button that I hope I’ll never use sure is a bit of a contrast.

But more than that, through my stubbornness I can see what you have given me.

Security. Serenity. Help at my fingertips. What more could a father ask for?
